Why are your teeth
darker than they were?

This is the question worth answering first. Surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking usually responds well. But a tooth that has gone gray on its own can mean something different, and whitening gel will not fix decay, an old filling that has darkened, or a tooth that needs treatment inside. We look before we whiten, so you are not bleaching over a problem.

Whitening lifts natural tooth enamel. It cannot change everything in your mouth, and it helps to know that before you start.

Coffee, tea and red wine stainingThe everyday staining that builds up slowly over years. This is what professional whitening handles best.
Teeth that dulled with ageEnamel thins over time and the yellower layer underneath shows through more. Whitening can lift this.
Tobacco stainingUsually responds, though it often takes longer and holds less well if smoking continues.
It will not lighten crowns or veneersPorcelain and composite do not bleach. If you have existing work on your front teeth, tell us — whitening around it can leave a mismatch.

In-office or
take-home trays?

Both use professional-strength gel, and both work. The difference is pace and control.

In office is done here in a single appointment, with your gums isolated and the gel applied under supervision. It suits people who want it handled in one sitting.

Custom take-home trays are made from a scan of your teeth so the gel stays on the enamel and off the gum. You wear them for a set period each day over a couple of weeks. Slower, more gradual, and easier to manage if your teeth are sensitive — plus you keep the trays for future touch-ups.

Some people do both: a session here, then trays to maintain it. We will talk through which makes sense once we have seen your teeth.

  • Whitening lightens natural teeth only — not crowns, veneers or fillings.
  • Results are not permanent. How long they hold depends on diet, smoking and habits.
  • Sensitivity is common during treatment and usually settles afterwards.

  • If one dark tooth is the issue, whitening the whole arch may not be the answer.

  1. An exam before any gel

    We check for decay, gum health and the cause of the discoloration, and record your starting shade. If something needs treating first, you will hear about it now rather than later.

  2. Scan and fit, or whiten here

    For take-home trays we scan your teeth and have trays made to fit them. For in-office whitening we protect the gums and carry out the session in the chair.

  3. Review and maintain

    We look at the result against the recorded starting shade, talk about sensitivity if you had any, and cover what keeps the result going.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

How much whiter will my teeth get?

That varies with the type of staining and the shade you start from, which is exactly why we record the starting shade. Anyone quoting you a specific number of shades before looking at your teeth is guessing. We will tell you what looks realistic for your case.

Is professional whitening different from drugstore strips?

Yes, in two ways. The gel is stronger, and it is applied with your gums protected by a barrier or a tray molded to your teeth. Strips are a reasonable option for mild surface staining; they tend to struggle with deeper discoloration and they do not adapt to the shape of your teeth.

Will it make my teeth sensitive?

Sensitivity during whitening is common and usually settles once treatment finishes. Tell us if your teeth are already sensitive — it changes how we pace the treatment and which approach we suggest, and there are steps we can take to manage it.

I have a crown on a front tooth. Can I still whiten?

You can whiten the natural teeth around it, but the crown will not change color. That sometimes leaves a visible mismatch where there was not one before. Mention it at the consultation and we will look at how noticeable it would be, and what the options are.

How long do the results last?

There is no fixed answer. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking all shorten it, and so does time. Many people top up periodically, which is one reason custom trays are useful — you keep them.

I have an event coming up. How far ahead should I book?

Tell us the date at the consultation and we will plan backwards from it. Leave enough room for an exam first and for any sensitivity to settle before the day.

Is whitening safe for my enamel?

Professional whitening supervised by a dentist has a long record of use. The reason we examine first is that whitening over untreated decay or inflamed gums is where problems come from, not the gel on healthy enamel.
