Crown or bridge?
One covers a tooth.
The other replaces one.
It is worth being clear, because the words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. A crown fits over a tooth that is still in your mouth but too damaged or heavily filled to be trusted on its own — it holds the remaining tooth together. A bridge fills a space where a tooth is already gone, by joining a replacement to the teeth on either side. Different problems, different treatments, different costs.

Bridge or implant
for a missing tooth?
If a tooth is already gone, a bridge is not your only option, and the right answer depends on the teeth around the gap.
A bridge is usually quicker and does not involve surgery. The trade-off is that the teeth on either side have to be prepared to carry it — which is a reasonable trade if those teeth already need crowns, and a bigger one if they are healthy and untouched.
An implant replaces the tooth on its own without involving the neighbours, but it takes longer, involves surgery and needs enough bone to support it. See implants and tooth replacement.

- Crowns and bridges do not last forever and may need replacing.
- A bridge means preparing the teeth either side, healthy or not.
- Decay can still start at the margin, so cleaning around them matters.
- Not every cracked tooth can be saved with a crown.

What does
a crown cost?
It varies with the material, the tooth and whether anything needs treating first. Where a crown follows root canal treatment, those are two separate costs and we will set both out so neither is a surprise.
We are a PPO provider for many dental plans and we accept children’s Medicaid. Coverage differs plan by plan, so give the team your details and they will check before you book rather than guessing. Crowns are often covered in part, though it depends on your plan. CareCredit is available if you would rather spread a larger treatment plan.
